AUGUST 2009 MUSING
WET! WET! WET!
In this well watered island there is usually
one component topic of conversation, the weather. Just where is this
blistering Bar B Q summer we were promised? I have had to put my central
heating on twice this week in the so called middle of summer. Work
in the garden is limited because of quick heavy showers drenching
everything including me. At least it has done the beans good.
There was a time when we blamed God for the
weather, now we blame the weather forecasters. They have certainly
made a ‘bloomer’ this summer. Despite the unseasonal weather
and the grumbles of the farmers, crops are produced in season. By
September we will be praising God for the harvest. I am glad that
God is really in control. Our Lord demonstrated this when He calmed
the storm on Lake Galilee.
In this country we bemoan the rain, but I well
remember being visited by a Christian friend from the Transkei. She
was overwhelmed by the lush green countryside, so different from the
semi arid landscape she was used to. There available water was used
carefully and sparingly. When I asked her to say grace before lunch
the first thing she did was to thank God for water. What we take for
granted to others is precious. So this summer holiday as we trek to
the beach and across our countryside enveloped in waterproofs, let
us thank God for life giving water. Above all let us remember and
thank God for the One who is the ‘Water of Life’. Have
a good holiday.
